Opportunities at AIMS
AIMS offers an incredible Pan-African research environment, steps away from the beach in Muizenberg, Cape Town. I am slowly building a research group at AIMS, focused primarily on mathematical questions at the intersection of quantum computing, machine learning, cryptography and theoretical computer science. If you are potentially interested in either a Ph.D. or post-doc position, there are a variety of potential opportunities:
- I now have two PhD positions available, with a target start date of 1st of January 2026. Please see the linked advertisement for details and instructions for applying.
- I also have one postdoctoral fellowship, also with a target start date of 1st of January 2026. Again, please see the linked advertisement for details.
If you are based in South Africa:
- The National Institute of Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS) has an annual call for Ph.D. bursaries, and I will consider supporting applications of students as a prospective Ph.D. supervisor. The deadline for funding in 2026 has now passed, but I will announce here when the deadline for funding in 2027 opens.
- The South African Quantum Technology Initiative (SAQuTI) has an annual call for Ph.D. bursaries, and again I will consider supporting applications as a prospective supervisor. Once the call for 2026 has been announced, I will post more details here.
If you are a post-doc based in Germany:
- I am an eligible host for Alexander von Humboldt Feodor Lynen Research Fellowships, which support research stays at AIMS of between 6 and 24 months. If you would be interested to apply for such a fellowship, please contact me via email with a CV, and the subject line “AvH FL research fellowship”.
Finally, if you are a Ph.D. student or post-doc with your own funding and would like to visit AIMS for a research visit, please reach out to me.
